Getting Started in the UK

The UK market, initial self-assessment, and the genuine first steps, with zero upfront cost.

In short: Getting started as a model in the UK: how the market works, an honest self-assessment and the first steps you can take at zero upfront cost.

Modelling 101: Getting Started

The UK market, briefly

There's no gatekept secret to starting out, and nobody legitimate should be asking you to pay for the privilege of trying. Here's what matters in the first few weeks. London is the primary UK market by a wide margin, high-tier fashion work and international client bookings concentrate almost exclusively there. Regional hubs, Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow, have real, active local industries too, generally more commercial and lifestyle-focused, but London is where most agencies with international reach are based.

This doesn't mean you need to live in London to start, it means the biggest opportunities and the most agencies sit there.

02

Zero upfront cost, no catch

You do not need expensive professional photos, a paid portfolio course, or a directory membership to begin. Agencies evaluate raw potential from simple, unedited digitals, not finished polish. Anyone suggesting otherwise before they've even met you is worth being cautious of.

The actual first step costs nothing: clean, unedited digitals against a plain wall in natural daylight, shot on a phone. That's it.

03

Measure yourself accurately first

Before applying anywhere, accurately measure your height, bust or chest, waist, and hips. Research where your physical attributes align, fashion, commercial, curve, petite, or fitness all have different, real requirements, and knowing roughly where you fit saves time applying to the wrong places.

This isn't about limiting yourself, it's about applying with accurate information rather than guessing.

See Types of Modelling for the full breakdown of what each lane looks for.

04

Your legal protections, from day one

UK agencies are legally restricted from charging you an upfront fee simply to represent you or list you as a photographic or fashion model. Commission from work they book you is standard and legal, an upfront joining fee is not. See Model Safety & Avoiding Scams for the full detail on this, it's worth reading before you apply anywhere.

05

What "becoming a model" actually means

There's no single moment where you officially become a model, no exam, no certificate, no permission slip. It's a gradual process: you take your first digitals, you apply somewhere, someone books you for a shoot, and at some point you've got a small body of work and a bit of experience behind you. Plenty of working models started with zero experience and no prior connection to the industry, an agency or a photographer took a chance on raw potential, not a résumé.

Experience helps in the sense that a photographer or agency can see you've handled direction before, taken feedback, and shown up properly, but it's not a locked door. Everyone currently working started at zero once.

06

The three realistic ways in

  • Apply directly to agencies, online submission or an open call, using nothing more than your digitals and measurements
  • Build a small body of work independently first, through collaboration sessions, before approaching anyone
  • Get scouted, in person or on social media, though this is the least common route and shouldn't be the one you're waiting around for

Most people combine the first two: apply while also quietly building a stronger portfolio through independent sessions, so you're not relying on a single yes or no from one agency.

A Few Questions

Common questions

With clean, unedited digitals shot on a phone against a plain wall in natural daylight, and accurate measurements. From there, research which type of modelling matches your look before applying anywhere.
No, but London is where most agencies with international reach are based, and where high-tier fashion and international bookings concentrate. Regional hubs like Manchester, Birmingham, and Glasgow have genuine, active commercial and lifestyle markets too.
None. Your first digitals cost nothing beyond a phone camera and a plain wall. Anyone asking for money before they've even met you or seen your work is worth being cautious of.
Height, bust or chest, waist, and hips as a minimum. These help you and agencies work out which categories fit, fashion, commercial, curve, petite, or fitness, before you spend time applying in the wrong direction.
Not an upfront fee just to sign or list you, UK agencies are specifically restricted from that. Commission taken from work they book you is standard and legal.
No, agencies scout and sign New Faces with no prior experience all the time. A solid first set of digitals is usually what starts the conversation, not a résumé.
There's no official threshold, it's a gradual process of taking digitals, applying, and being booked. Plenty of working models started with no experience and no industry connection at all.
Apply directly to agencies while also building a small portfolio independently through collaboration sessions, rather than waiting on a single agency's response before doing anything else.
