What people are actually quoted

Search around and the figures you'll find for a UK portfolio shoot range from about 150 pounds to over 1,000, with most studio packages landing somewhere between 250 and 700. An agency's own test shoot, if they run one, tends to sit closer to 200. None of that is a scam on its own, a real photographer's time, editing and a studio space cost real money, and plenty of people pay it and get exactly what they were promised.

02

What that fee is actually paying for

A typical package covers a set number of hours, one or two outfit changes, a fixed number of edited final images, and sometimes hair and makeup. Where people run into trouble isn't the existence of a fee, it's vague packages: no fixed number of images, extra charges appearing after the shoot, or pressure to buy more edits than the price originally included.

Before paying anything, it's worth having the exact number of images, the turnaround time, and what usage rights you get, in writing, before the day.

03

The trap this industry specifically warns about

There's a well known pattern here: a free or cheap shoot, followed by being shown unedited images and told you need to buy a package to get anything usable. It's designed to feel like the fee only appears once you're already invested in the pictures. If a shoot is advertised as free and the free part turns out to only be the time behind the camera, that's worth being cautious about.

04

Why a genuine collaboration is different

A collaboration shoot works the opposite way round: you and the photographer both agree upfront that no fee is being charged in either direction, you both know exactly what you're getting before you turn up, and the images you leave with are the actual final, edited images, not a taster set held back until you pay.

05

If you do decide to pay for a shoot

Get the deliverables in writing before the day: exact number of edited images, turnaround time, what you're allowed to use them for, and whether there are any extra costs beyond the headline price. A photographer confident in their own pricing will have no issue writing this down.

A Few Questions

Common questions

Yes, plenty of legitimate photographers and studios charge for portfolio sessions, and a clear price for a clear set of deliverables isn't a red flag on its own.
Most portfolio packages run from about 150 to 1,000 pounds depending on length, location and how many images are included, with 250 to 700 being the most common range for a studio session.
A collaboration shoot works because both sides get something without money changing hands, you get real images for your portfolio, the photographer gets new work for theirs.
The exact number of edited images, how long they'll take, what you're allowed to use them for, and confirmation there are no extra costs beyond the price you were quoted.
